A visit to Gallipoli is a must see for many Australian and New Zealanders. While in Istanbul we decided to take a tour down to pay our respects at this sacred site. I have to warn you it is a long day, catching the bus early in the morning and returning close to midnight that night.
Most of the tours seem to be for 2 days visiting Helen Of Troy the second day however we just did Gallipoli due to time constraints.
Arriving in Gallipoli we met our local tour guide who took us through the Australian Memorial, New Zealand Memorial and Turkish Memorial. The tour was extremely informative and gave a good insight into what it was like for the service personal on all sides. We visited the grave sites, and reading the headstones was very moving.
We toured the bunkers, and saw and walked the narrow path dividing the enemy from each other. A walk around ANZAC cove was another moving experience and seeing the steep hill where the soldiers had to run up carrying their packs on their backs makes you wonder how anyone could survive.
The memorials are very tastefully done and we are so glad that we made the trip to see it.
I would rate the time we spent in Gallipoli as one of the most amazing experiences of my life and all Australian and New Zealand citizens should visit if they have the opportunity.
